While NXP Semiconductors has expressed plans to reinforce its local R&D activities in wireless technologies in Sophia-Antipolis, on the French Riviera, rumors are circulating that STMicroelectronics NV will close down its center.

Located in Sophia-Antipolis since February 2002, the center focused on R&D activities in the field of wireless infrastructure, especially base stations and related equipment that connect mobile phones with other mobile terminals to fixed networks. The decision is said to be in line with ST's strategy to close its infrastructure division.

At SAME Forum in Sophia-Antipolis, a host of participants working for local companies confirmed the statement, but insisted that their identity be kept secret. "Although no official statement has been made, everybody in the local microelectronics community knows about ST's intention to close its center. About 35 employees are concerned," testified one participant to EE Times Europe.

No official confirmation could be obtained by the time of posting this story.
