An ultrasmall, dual-channel power management IC that provides two high-performance outputs for portable device applications, including smart phones, GPS devices and digicams, has been launched by Micrel Inc. The MIC2225 integrates a 2MHz synchronous buck regulator with an independent 300mA low dropout regulator (LDO) in an ultrasmall package that the company claims is the industry's smallest combo buck regulator/LDO.

The MIC2225 is suitable for applications where an additional set of voltages is needed to support an applications processor or coprocessor. The combination of the 600mA DC/DC and 300mA linear regulator permits the use of small value inductors and capacitors that reduce board space, supports continuous load currents up to 600mA, and achieves more than 90 percent efficiency. Fixed output voltage options are available down to 1V on the DC/DC converter and 0.8V on the LDO. The unique PWM architecture also offers fast transient response, high efficiency and low output ripple. The MIC2225 is housed in a small leadless 10pin, 2mm x 2mm thin MLF with a junction range temperature from -40-125C.
