China's Hi-Tech Wealth has selected NXP Semiconductor's Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5110 for its solar-powered mobile phone, claimed to be the first of its kind to be commercialized.

NXP's system solution optimizes solar charging by enabling ultralow power consumption for longer standby and talk times in the S116, which went into mass production in July this year.

The new solar phone allows users to recharge its battery in real-time, leveraging any light source, even candle light ensuring a longer standby time versus any other mobile phone on the market. With Laucent Technology's design capability and NXP's Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5110, the S116 also features a wide range of multimedia applications and connectivity while minimizing power consumption.

"Solar-powered design signals a revolutionary innovation in the wireless multimedia industry by providing a consistent and stable power supply for mobile phones," said Boyu Zhang, president of Hi-Tech Wealth. "The cellphone, which delivers eco-friendly solar energy technology, has changed the traditional concept that handsets have to rely on AC charging and a fixed power mode. The eco-friendly design is also a great contribution to meet worldwide demand for 'Green' products and services."

"Laucent and Hi-Tech Wealth are strategic partners," said Changshou Zhan, general manager of Laucent. "We have chosen to work with NXP because it has established solid leadership in the mobile communications market. NXP's Nexperia Cellular System Solution, a market-proven, mature and efficient solution with low power, has been widely applied in commercial phones from many renowned mobile phone manufacturers, providing excellent standby performance meeting the convenience and performance needs of our customers."

"Designed by Laucent and marketed by Hi-Tech Wealth, the S116 phone demonstrates the capabilities of domestic mobile phone design firms," said Adrian Chu, VP of sales & regional marketing for China, NXP. "NXP will continue to empower customers in China with mature and advanced solutions that enable fast time to market in response to rapidly changing market dynamics."
