Sharp 10th generation panel

Sharp Corp. has developed a 1-inch thick LCD panel that it says will be integrated into mainstream displays produced at a 10th generation (10G) fab scheduled to go online in 2010.

The whisper-thin display uses a backlight, considered in some corners to be a drawback of LCD technology. Some market watchers believe self-emitting displays, such as OLED panels, will emerge as the next-generation flat panels of choice, said Mikio Katayama, president and COO of Sharp. But he questioned whether "self-emitting panel technology will really replace LCD TVs," adding, "This prototype is what Sharp presents as the near-future flat-panel TV."

To ensure design flexibility for the 52-inch prototype, Sharp developed a set of millimeter-wave transmitters and receivers for wireless transmission of full-high-definition image data in the HDMI format. The company's spec sheet for the panel suggests it achieves higher performance than existing displays. The contrast ratio is 100,000:1 in a dark room. Color reproduction is 150 percent of the NTSC color gamut. Motion picture response time is 4ms.

The prototype panel weighs 25kg?light enough for hanging on a wall, said Shigeaki Mizushima, group general manager of Sharp's display technology development group. Assuming an average daily viewing time of 4.5hrs, annual power consumption is estimated to be 140kWh per year. That's half the power consumption of conventional LCD TVs and a quarter the consumption of plasma TVs, said Mizushima, who added that prototype specifications are tentative.

Sharp did not disclose other technical details or a marketing plan for the panel. Katayama said only that Sharp hopes "to establish volume production technology by the commencement of the 10G Sakai fab in March 2010."
