Vietnam WiMAX trials set for Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh

Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) is set to launch WiMAX trials with three base stations and 30-50 access points in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh next month, according to a report from Viet Nam News.

Le Quang Dao, head of testing for Viet Nam Datacommunication Company (VDC), a VNPT subsidiary, disclosed that transmission speeds of the trial may reach 4- to 5Mbps within a 5km radius. The telecom has not set price for the WiMAX service but has indicated it will not cost more than the current Internet plans.

A WiMAX pilot project has recently been completed in the province of Lao Cai, with its second phase taking place in Ta Van. The project has sponsored by Intel, VDC and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and aimed to was to develop portable internet connectivity that can later be upgraded.

Eleven other locations including the post office, school, guesthouse and commune council in Ta Van, which is 11km from Sapa, is set to be connected through WiMAX in the second phase.

The Vietnam government has also licensed three other firmsFPT, Viettel and VTCto provide WiMax.
