Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) will slash its 2010 fibre-optic service subscription target to about 20 million from 30 million, according to Reuters citing the Nikkei newspaper report.

NTT has been counting on fibre-optic lines to boost growth as demand for its standard lines diminishes. However, according to Nikkei, the company has been lagging behind schedule in signing up new subscribers. The service, which kicked off in 2001, registered 7.42 million subscribers at the end of September, making the target difficult to achieve.

The company's decision to cut its subscription target may affect the Japanese government's goal to make broadband available throughout the country by March 2011, the report added.
