The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has included South Korea's homegrown WiBro technology in the international 3G standards, according to a report from Korea.net.
South Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication disclosed that the ITU approved WiBro as the sixth 3G communications standards in a meeting held Oct. 18.
KT Corp., a fixed-line telephony and Internet operator, was first to commercially launch the WiBro service in and around the Seoul area in 2006. Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and other companies are currently unveiling diverse WiBro devices.
According to experts, ITU's endorsement will help WiBro raise its profile and is expected to accelerate WiBro's advance to overseas markets by leveling the playing field, enabling it to compete with other communications platforms.
