Worldwide shipments of navigation devices will continue to flourish from 2007 to 2012, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.5 percent. This is according to a new forecast from ABI Research.

In terms of market shares, Europe will account for 53 percent in 2007, and will remains the primary navigation devices market throughout the forecast period. However, Asian markets are revving up their engines, demonstrating the most rapid growth with a CAGR of 27 percent.

Another stellar performance comes from personal navigation devices (PNDs), whose sales have been increasing rapidly in recent years. More than 29 million PNDs are expected to be shipped this year, buoyed by high growth rates in both North American and European markets.

In-car navigation systems are the major navigation products in Asian markets due to the high penetration rate of OEMs in Japan. "However," says research analyst Wang Tao, "with the development of location-based services (LBS), more and more value-added navigation services have been launched with GPS-enabled PDAs and smart phones. PNDs will face a new challenge coming from GPS-enabled mobile devices. In 2012, GPS-enabled PDAs and smart phones will comprise 23 percent of all navigation device shipments."

Adds research director Mike Ippoliti, "The PND form-factor has many advantages and will not be pushed aside by handset-based navigation services."
