Fires halt Sony, Kyocera California operations

Sony Corp. and Kyocera Corp. disclosed that they have stopped production at their facilities in San Diego, California due to fires raging in the southern part of the state, according to a Reuters report. No production lines were reported damaged and no employees were hurt.

According to Sony, its U.S. headquarters office and a small assembly facility making Vaio PCswith a combined workforce of 2,000had been closed since Oct. 22. The date for reopening the facilities was to be decided depending on the progress in containing the fires. Sony's headquarters functions have not been significantly disrupted as people work at home using phones and e-mail, the report said.

Kyocera, on the other hand, said it has stopped some production of chip packaging in San Diego as several of its workers have not been able to make it to the factory, which employs 500. The spokesperson of Kyocera said the company was unable to confirm the level of production cutbacks at the plant, which mainly supplies U.S. chipmakers. He added that so far no shipment delays are foreseen.
