MAC/PHY, RF chipsets support Mobile WiMAX, WiBro

South Korea-based XRONet Corp. has begun sampling of baseband MAC/PHY SoC (XRO7000) and RF transceiver IC (XRO3000) chipsets targeting Mobile WiMax Wave2/Wave1/WiBro terminals.

The XRO7000 and XRO3000 support all features of Mobile WiMAX Wave2 profile as well South Korea's homegrown WiBro service. The chipsets offer low power consumption and small form factor designed for handheld devices like smartphones, PDAs, mobile internet devices, ultra mobile PCs, USB dongles, PC cards, express cards and SDIO devices.

XRONet's hardwired 2x2 MIMO OFDMA engine also provides spatial multiplexing, doubling the data rate, and space time coding, doubling the cell range. Its MIMO algorithm gives the ML (maximum likelihood) performance, the theoretical limit of spatial multiplexing at the fraction of power consumption of conventional ML algorithms.

XRO7000 is a single chip modem SoC that supports PUSC, FUSC, Band-AMC, 2x2 MIMO SM/STBC for both downlink/uplink. It also provides a variety of host interfaces including notebook PC, PDA, smart phone, portable media player, portable game console and car navigation systems.

The XRO3000 single chip RF IC integrates PLL, LNAs, mixers, VGAs, drive amplifier, low pass filters, auto-calibration of DC/IQ offset, and multiple chains for MIMO. The chip supports multi-bands from 2.3GHz to 2.7GHz with multiple channel bandwidths from 3.5MHz to 10MHz.

XRO7000's distributed architecture with hardwired PHY and MAC engines, on-chip AD/DA, low power CPUs, memories, and dynamic power manager, minimize the chipset's power consumption on the fly. On the other hand, XRO3000's MIMO-optimized direct conversion RF architecture raises the performance limit in TX/RX EVM, noise figure, phase noise, linear TX power, and dynamic range.

XRO7000 and XRO3000 come with a complete software suite of MAC, device drivers, connection manager, RF calibration software and a reference design kit.
