As the PC market continues to heat up, manufacturers are realizing that product differentiation plays a vital role for their survival, and that security will soon become the PC manufacturer's greatest advantage, said CCID Consulting in its latest report.

When secure PCs first appeared in 2005, the concept grabbed much attention, but a stagnation period soon took over. This developing segment has just awoken from this inaction as China PC manufactures Tsinghua TongFang and Great Wall started to focus their efforts on the development of next-generation PC security products.

Demand for information security also continues to attract the attention of the China government and the PC industry. Today, PCs are facing more hostile environments and attacksvirus, hackers, junk mail, system vulnerabilities and cyber crimeso traditional information security applications like firewalls, virus prevention and intrusion detection software will no longer satisfy the growing demand of users. Government bureaus, the armed forces and specialty areas related to national security have very high demands from their security systems. There are also urgent security issues to be solved in crucial industries such as finance, telecommunications, civil aviation and electrical power. In other commercial fields, requirements for secure PCs are also gradually blooming. Despite the previous forecast that 70 percent of PCs would collocate the secure chips in 2007 didn't materialize, the market environment for secure PC is becoming mature, noted CCID.

Blooming market
Governmental support has become the greatest advantage for China manufactures, according to CCID. Policies regulate that the products related to code technology should be designed, produced and sold by China manufactures which have the State Password Administration Committee's appointed aptitude. In the "eleventh five-year plan" and "863 Program", "trusting computing" technology has been listed as the focal point.

According to the "2006-2020 China's Informatization Development Strategy," trusting computing technology is the basis of national information security management. Currently, the embryo of China's secure PC industry chain has been formed. At the upstream of security chips, manufactures Lenovo, SINOSUN and JETWAY master some core technologies and many PC manufactures are now ready to take part. However, the present industry chain still has a room for improvement.

Regarding the technology, secure PCs with the trust computing technology only have the solutions for TPM security chips. In the future, manufactures will have the integrative research on trust computing, trustworthy networks and trustworthy software as well as melding the TPM technology in products. A comprehensive secure solutions plan must provide self-contained safeguards for terminals, chips, mainboards, BIOS and OS. At present, there is no uniform standard for secure PCs and it is necessary to formulate this standard, said CCID.

For manufactures, they are now realizing the growing expectations from customers in terms of secure PCs. Users are demanding better quality and more choices when looking at security products. They are no longer satisfied with concepts like fingerprint identification: they demand comprehensive protection for information terminals and data security PCs. For the family and individual users, the concerns on PC security focus on the external network. Given this, manufactures should emphasize on the how to resist the dangers from external networks because the users pay attention to their reliability.

It is necessary for manufactures to set up a secure PC alliance to realize the link of the upstream and downstream industry chains. Moreover, R&D on secure PCs should focus on meeting user demands. CCID Consulting concludes that it will only be a matter of time when secure PCs will become one of the mainstreams of the PC market, concludes CCID.
