Serial RapidIO switches connect 'any' digital media component

Integrated Device Technology Inc. (IDT) launched a new family of serial RapidIO-based central packet switches for routing packets for distribution among DSPs, processors FPGAs, other switches, or any other serial RapidIO-based devices. The CPS solutions incorporate in-house third-generation IDT Serdes and serial RapidIO core switch technology, and are claimed to provide customers with flexibility, scalability, high-performance and low power consumption at very competitive costs. These switches can be used to connect virtually any digital media component to any other, in applications ranging from wireless infrastructure to enterprise storage, imaging applications and beyond.

The CPS family offers 4x and 1x port options coupled with features for system bring-up and debug. The CPS family of solutions includes three device configurationswith 16-port, 12-port, and 8-port options for 1x port counts. Moreover, the CPS family is pin-to-pin compatible with the IDT PPS Gen 2 family of devices, allowing customers the flexibility to upgrade their next-generation systems to the more powerful pre-processing solution with no impact on hardware or board design.

Leveraging the serial RapidIO, JTAG and I2C interconnect standards, the IDT CPS family specifically addresses such markets as wireless and wireline, imaging, medical, military, IPTV, and other high-end communications markets and embedded applications. Supporting software solutions provided for the CPS and PPS switch families include an IDT-developed calculator that allows customers to calculate power usage in various usage profiles. Customers can use this calculator to adjust device options to achieve maximum power savings.

Based upon IDT pre-processing technology, the CPS family's feature set enables critical diagnostics during early stages of testing all the way to the end-application. In addition, the CPS devices are configurable through any of the serial RapidIO, JTAG, or I2C ports. The devices include a "loopback mode", which provides customers with the added flexibility to work with the physical layer of the IDT device and quickly identify the source of any performance bottlenecks. The CPS also incorporates enhanced diagnostic functions such as "kill" and "trace/mirror" capabilities that enable an added layer of security that is often critical in embedded applications.

About IDT central packet switch solutions
These central packet solutions are serial RapidIO-based switches whose functionality is central to routing packets for distribution among DSPs, processors FPGAs, other switches, or any other serial RapidIO-based devices. They can also be used in serial RapidIO backplane switching.

They support serial RapidIO packet switching (unicast, multicast, and an optional broadcast) from any of their input ports to any of their output ports. The CPS-16 offers support for up to 16 ports of 1x or 4 ports of 4x (or combinations of 1x/4x), while the CPS-12 provides 12 ports 1x or 3 ports 4x (or combinations), and the CPS-8 provides 8 ports 1x or 1 port 4x with 4 ports 1x.

Each switch offers full bandwidth support for its maximum port count and port speed options: the CPS-16 is 40GBps, the CPS-12 is 30GBps, and the CPS-8 is 20GBps. Each port can be configured for 3.125Gbaud, 2.5Gbaud, or 1.25Gbaud, for long haul (backplane) or short haul (board) transmission profiles, with configurable drive strengths and pre-emphasis settings. The devices include IDT technical support available from product definition to application support.

Hardware/software development kits
The CPS solutions are supported by ATCA- and MicroTCA-compatible dedicated development platforms, designed in conjunction with Texas Instruments, together with a comprehensive range of software development tools, such as GUI, API, drivers and 3rd party tools.

Each kit supports all other IDT pre-processing solutions and serial RapidIO-enabled solutions such as the 10G Serial Buffer, and enables the designer to tune system and component configurations to meet system requirements. Moreover, to ensure that each system design is optimized for production and meets its time to market objectives, IDT provides customers with extensive collaborative support, including system modeling and signal integrity analyses, and schematic and layout review services.

The CPS devices are available in a RoHS 324-ball BGA 19mm x 19mm, reducing package size in space-constrained applications. The CPS devices are currently sampling.
