BASF Aktiengesellschaft has opened its Electronics Materials Center Europe in Ludwigshafen, Germany to its customers in the semiconductor industry. The company produces process chemicals for the semiconductor industry and its suppliers at the production center.

"Yes, there is enough semiconductor manufacturing in Europe to justify such an investment," said a company spokesperson, pointing out that chip manufacturers are not the only customers for the new center but also companies that supply preliminary products.

According to BASF, the center represents millions in investment and employs a staff of 60. It includes purification facilities as well as clean-room filling stations. After completion of qualification services at the end of 2007, the center will ramp up its routine production. In addition to production, the center combines analytics, R&D, marketing and sales at one location, the company said. Its scope will focus on "classical" semiconductor technology; materials for organic electronics will be handled at other locations within the BASF group, the spokesperson explained.
