Qimonda, Supermicro partner on green computing

Qimonda AG and Super Micro Computer Inc. have joined forces to develop an energy efficient memory technology for high-performance computing.

Qimonda has supplied what it touts as the first 1.5V, 800MHz DDR2 fully buffered dual-in-line memory modules (FB-DIMMs), which reduce supply voltage by nearly one-fifth without any performance loss, in several Supermicro systems.

In tests performed by Supermicro, system-level power savings using Qimonda modules operating at 800MHz were as much as 20 percent in a fully loaded system, compared to a system operating with 1.8V supply voltage modules. This translates to energy savings of up to 40W on memory power consumption per system. That lower heat dissipation requirement also provides additional cost savings and reduces the potential for heat-related system failures.

"Supermicro's green computing initiative is all about helping its customers reduce the cost of ownership for the data center and helping to preserve the environment for future generations," said Alex Hsu, chief sales and marketing officer of Supermicro. "Qimonda has a reputation for delivering lower power memory solutions, which makes them a key vendor in our own drive to Keep IT Green."

"Reducing operating voltage often has meant lowering clock speed, which in turn cuts performance," said Michael Buckermann, senior VP of Qimonda's computing business unit. "Qimonda is the first DRAM supplier to come to market with modules able to both operate at 1.5V and run at 800MHz. By achieving power reduction with no performance penalty, we are helping systems providers reduce the amount of overall power consumed, increase the lifetime of their systems and reduce the total cost of ownership for user organizations."

Qimonda is supplying Supermicro with dual-rank 2Gbyte DDR2 FB-DIMMs for the SC07 International Supercomputing Conference demonstration. The modules are part of Qimonda's DIMM portfolio, which extends from devices optimized for mobile and desktop systems to dual- and quad-rank 8Gbyte DD2 FB-DIMMs for high-performance workstations and servers, as well as next generation DDR3 DRAMs.
