WTO upholds ruling against Japan

Keywords:WTO ruling? Japan DRAM duties?

The World Trade Organization stood by a ruling that Japan has violated international trade rules by imposing punitive import duties on DRAMs from South Korea.

The South Korea government argued before the WTO that Japanese duties on Hynix DRAMs were discriminatory. A WTO appeals body ruled that Japan wrongly concluded that Hynix gained an unfair advantage in the chip market though government subsidies.

The WTO has yet to order Japan to eliminate duties on South Korean DRAMs, but the ruling is expected to result in Japan having to recalculate the 27.2 percent chip tariff, which was introduced in 2006.
