Low-ESR tantalum capacitors target embedded controls

A range of tantalum capacitors with low equivalent series resistance (ESR) has been developed by AVX Corp. for embedded control systems. The TPS and TPM series of capacitors target embedded systems in industrial, telecommunications and other applications that call for long operation and stability of parameters.

The capacitors offer improved filtering capability and power rating within a small package and reduced height. The new mirror-design multi-anode tantalum capacitors in the TPM D-case size with a 2.9mm height provide almost an identical ESR level compared with traditional E-case multi-anode construction.

The symmetrical design of two horizontal anodes allows the reduction of inductance down to 1nH, which is 50 percent lower than with standard single-anode construction. The lower equivalent series inductance shifts the resonance frequency up to 500kHz, which enables more effective usage in today's popular switching frequency range of 250- to 500kHz, said AVX. Due to the higher power dissipation of the mirror design D-case, the capacitor can handle higher ripple current compared with the single-anode design.

The horizontal layout of the anodes offers an additional benefit of downsizing to a 2mm profile, making the TPM Y-case multi-anode capacitors suitable for height limited application. All AVX tantalum capacitors meet the requirement of lead-free assembly and are RoHS compliant.
