Nokia Siemens locks in new GSM-R deal in China

Nokia Siemens Networks has again been selected to implement GSM-R in the newly commissioned Hefei-Wuhan Passenger-dedicated Line at the eastern section of Shanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu, China. Targeted for early 2009, the 360km Hefei-Wuhan Line has 14 stations, passes through Anhui and Hubei provinces.

The company has recently secured GSM-R contracts for Wuhan-Guangzhou Line, the longest high-speed railway in the world, and for Hefei-Nanjing Line, China's first passenger-dedicated line for commercial use.

"China's railway construction is experiencing an unprecedented leap forward. Nokia Siemens Networks is striving to provide world class GSM-R system and solutions so as to support secure operation, high quality service and efficient railway transportation for Hefei-Wuhan Line," said Zhang Zhiqiang, head of the greater China region of Nokia Siemens Networks.

The company has undertaken five of the total seven GSM-R passenger-dedicated line projects in China that are either under construction or have been put into operation. Nokia Siemens is also the exclusive provider of Chinese GSM-R intelligent network and HLRi systems. The GSM-R core network provided by Nokia Siemens Networks will serve the main railway lines and bear over 50 percent of the wireless communication traffic on China railways. To date Nokia Siemens has deployed 20 GSM-R networks in 14 countries serving 50,000km of railways.
