Tiny MOSFETs target high-efficiency DC/DC conversion

Aiming to help designers shrink DC/DC converter designs, Alpha & Omega Semiconductor Inc. has released the AON740x advanced MOSFET family in a compact DFN package.

The product family is claimed to be the first to offer a monolithically integrated Schottky diode (SRFET) in this type of package. It its designed at space-constrained applications that require high efficiency DC/DC conversion such as notebook PCs, blade servers, networking equipment, graphics cards and DC/DC power supply modules.

The DFN3x3EP package allows DC/DC designers to achieve higher current and power density as a result of the package's exposed copper lead-frame, which permits efficient heat transfer into the PCB. The 3mm x 3mm package saves space by using only one-third the board area of an SO-8 while maintaining the same 60C/W thermal performance as SO-8-packaged devices.

The AON740x family also consists of fast-switching high-side MOSFETs. The devices can be combined in synchronous buck converters with the low-side AON770x SRFET family for optimal efficiency and performance. The SRFET device's Schottky body diode features a low-forward voltage drop of 0.4V that reduces power losses and a soft-recovery characteristic that reduces ringing and associated EMI.

The AON7400, AON7700, AON7406, AON7702, AON7408, AON7704 are available with prices ranging form 31 center to 60 cents each in 1,000-piece.
