Hitachi High-Technologies Corp. is considering Israel as a location for a nanotechnology or software R&D center, according to Israeli newspaper Globes. The report cited Yoshiro Kuwata, chairman of Hitachi High-Technologies, as saying that the Japanese company might need researchers in these disciplines.

In the past, the Japanese refrained from opening Israeli R&D centers, because of the possible reaction of Arab countries, but this may be changing. Kuwata came to Israel with a delegation of 15 top Japanese business executives to further the cooperation between the two countries. He stressed the human capital that is present in Israel, and that Japan might need, and he urged Israeli engineers to come and work in Japan.

He also said that the Japanese firm might establish a center in Singapore, where Israeli, Singaporean and Japanese engineers would cooperate in various technology-based projects.

Hitachi High-Technologies manufactures electronic equipment and materials for semiconductor production, laboratory equipment such as mass spectrometers and nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus.
