The projected top-10 chip rankings for 2007 released by Gartner Inc. had a different spin compared to rankings by other industry analysts.

Intel Corp. is projected to be the world's largest chip maker again, followed in order by Samsung, TI and STMicroelectronics.

Gartner combined the sales of Infineon Technologies AG and its DRAM spin-off Qimonda. As a result, Infineon is in fifth place in the ranking in terms of worldwide sales for 2007.

In iSuppli Corp.'s rankings, which were recently disclosed, Infineon was in 10th place and Qimonda was in 16th. iSuppli did not combine the sales of the two firms.

In Gartner's list, vendor performances were mixed with two vendors in the top 10 that experienced double-digit growth and two vendors that showed declines in revenue. Toshiba Corp. and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. showed growth due to the NAND flash boom. Texas Instruments Inc. and Infineon showed declines.

Worldwide semiconductor revenue totaled $270.3 billion in 2007, a 2.9 percent increase from 2006, according to preliminary results from Gartner.
