A tiny TV tuner module that is compatible with China's DTV terrestrial broadcasting standard has been developed by Sharp Corp. The VA3C5CZ920 has a very small package size at 10.7mm x 10.7mm x 1.4mm, enabling portable TVs and similar devices to receive terrestrial digital broadcasts, with low power consumption of 530mW during continuous operation.

Implemented in August 2006, China's Digital Television Terrestrial Broadcasting System Standard has begun test service and plans are for a gradual conversion to full-fledged service. This is fueling expectations for a growing market in mobile equipment capable of receiving high-quality HD broadcasts as the country heads for major events like the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

The VA3C5CZ920 tuner receives at the frequency spectrums of VHF band 167-223MHz and

UHF band 470-870MHz and outputs in TS format. It features built in OFDM demodulation and an I?C control interface. Supply voltage required is 1.8V RF, 1.2V for the OFDM core, and I/O supply voltage 2.5V.

Samples will be available in late January 2008 at $265.
