Reports circulated last week that Apple Inc. is in talks with Japan's top mobile phone carrier, NTT DoCoMo, for the launching of the iPhone in the country. According to The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, Apple CEO Steve Jobs met with NTT DoCoMo president Masao Nakamura to negotiate the terms of a deal, with one stumbling block being Apple's desire for a cut of the same percentage of subscriber revenue that it receives from other carriers.

NTT DoCoMo spokesman Shuichiro Ichikoshi did confirm Jobs and Nakamura met but refused to elaborate further.

If the negotiation with DoCoMo fails, there is still Softbank, whom Apple is in talks also, said the report.

Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock declined to comment.

Apple has said it plans to launch the device in Asia in 2008 but has not provided details.
