Aimed at 1394 FireWire and GbE networks, Firecomms is offering a transceiver that will enable low-cost gigabit links over plastic optical fiber (POF).

Based on the company's proprietary VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) technology, the EDL1000G-510 power transceiver is capable of delivering data over POF at rates up to 1.25Gbit/s, and is pin compatible with 1x9 optical transceivers for glass fiber.

The EDL1000G-510 is fitted with OptoLock, a plugless interconnect that allows quick connection of bare POF. The EDL1000G-510 consists of a red VCSEL and a receiver designed specifically for POF applications. Because it emits visible light, the EDL1000G-510 enhances safety and simplifies set-up and test procedures.

The EDL1000G-510 is designed with an industrial-standard transceiver footprint, making it an easy drop-in replacement product for communication over POF with low-cost, consumer-friendly connectors.

The device is currently shipping, said the company.
