Power inductors load higher current, lower RDC

Taiyo Yuden Inc.'s new CKP2520 multilayer chip power inductors promise better performance compared to the company's previous CKP series parts. The -2R2 part, for example, offers DC resistance and rated current improvements of 35 percent and 44 percent, respectively. With an EIA 1008 case size footprint of 2.5mm x 2mm and a maximum height of only 1mm, CKP2520 devices enables the design of thinner, higher-performance, multifunction cellphones, digital cameras and other battery-powered ultraportable electronic equipment.

The devices in the new series offer a range of inductance values and current ratings from 1?H to 4.7?H and 1.4A to 1.1A, respectively.

The continuing miniaturization trend in the feature-rich portable device market is driving the need for smaller, thinner choke coils and multiple DC/DC converters. In response, refinements to the company's material science techniques generated component structural improvements that resulted in significant performance increases relative to case size.

Tighter electromagnetic field control and a proprietary internal-electrode printing process that doubled the thickness of the internal conductor resulted in lower DC resistance (RDC) and higher current ratings. New additions to the CKP2520 series, now under development, are expected to result in further performance gains in the 1008 and smaller case sizes.

Sample price is 20 cents each. The devices are available in production quantities. Delivery is two weeks ARO.
