Microsoft and South Korean firms Daum Communications and Celrun have agreed to set up an Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) joint venture, according to an Agence France-Presse report.

Under the agreement Daum and Celrun will provide content and equipment, respectively, while Microsoft will offer its own IPTV solutions and focus on overseas marketing, said Daum spokeswoman Park Hyun-Jung.

Despite being one of the most wired countries, South Korea has been relatively slow to introduce IPTV due to disagreements between the broadcasting and communications industries.

Park disclosed that the deal was in preparation for the IPTV service launch in the country, following the recent passage of a related bill the parliament. The bill allows customers to watch video on demand (VOD) this year and real-time programming including sports, dramas and news by 2009.

Daum plans to start the VOD service in Q2, in time for the formal launch of the joint venture. Park added that the company will provide real-time broadcasting if granted a license from the government.
