Investigators questioned three senior Samsung Groups officials Jan. 25 as part of the independent probe on allegations that the conglomerate amassed slush funds to bribe government officials, politicians and prosecutors.

This is according to a report from the Yonhap News Agency, which cited that Won Jong-un, director of Cheil Industries, Samsung's textile arm, was among the three questioned. The other two were not immediately identified, but they reportedly work at Samsung Electronics.

The questioning followed the Jan. 24 raid by special prosecutors on the headquarters of Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Co., which allegedly diverted insurance money into slush funds. Sources said the prosecutors seized more than 120 boxes of documents, which are undergoing analysis.

The special prosecutors have earlier searched the private office of Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee and several units of the group.

The investigation was approved by the parliament two weeks ago after Samsung whistleblower Kim Yong-chul, claimed that the group operated a vast network to gain business favors and dodge charges against illegal activities.

Kim claimed that Samsung tried to cover up an illicit deal in which Samsung officials allegedly tried to transfer wealth and group control from Lee to his son, Jae-yong, by forging documents and bribing high-ranking prosecutors.
