SK Telecom to bring Hollywood movies to handsets

South Korean mobile carrier SK Telecom has signed a deal Sony Pictures Television International to offer the latest movie content to its mobile subscribers, according to Financial terms were not disclosed.

Under the agreement, SK will provide its 22 million customers with a range of TV dramas and Hollywood films held by Sony's affiliates such as Columbia and Tristar. SK subscribers will be able to watch the latest video content through the carrier's mobile multimedia service platforms, NATE and June, for up to $2.1 apiece. Users will be charged additional data communication fees unless they are subscribing to a flat-rate wireless Internet service.

SK is the first local mobile carrier to secure a deal with the media giant. The agreement comes amid the increasing efforts by local communications companies to secure competitive video content as IPTV and mobile broadcasting services are gaining popularity.
