The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp. (HKSTP) and Mentor Graphics have agreed to jointly set up a training center for SoC/IC design technology.

Mentor Graphics will provide HKSTP with a full range of EDA software together with technical expertise. For its part, HKSTP will provide clients in Hong Kong and southern China technical training and support at the IC Design/IC Development Support Center in Science Park. HKSTP will also invite universities and research institutions to participate in training activities in the center.

With the rapid development of China's electronics sector, many local and foreign enterprises have established IC design companies in the southern China region concurrent with an increase in tenants at the HKSTP complex. The Hong Kong SAR government is supporting the development of IC segment by encouraging the creation of an easily accessible platform for IC design complemented by a talent training scheme through HKSTP.

"Through the strategic alliance with Mentor Graphics, the SoC/IC design platform for Hong Kong reaches new heights," said S.W. Cheung, VP of business development and technology support at HKSTP. "The SOC/IC Training Center provides a significant boost to design talents and is beneficial to their professional development. We expect that the training center can elevate the competence and importance of HKSTP's IC Design/Development Support Center within the industry, both in mainland China and around the globe."

By training local talents while continuing to attract foreign investment and joint ventures to develop technology and products in Hong Kong, IC design companies are expected to be more ready to enter the mainland China market. These measures also facilitate the development of China's domestic electronics sector and spur the introduction of innovative design and technology under the "7+1" framework.

"Mentor Graphics is focused on the fast growing China market, particularly southern China," said Danny Perny, general manager for Mentor Graphics China. "The collaboration with HKSTP enables the company to provide more support to facilitate educational institutions and entrepreneurs alike to nurture design talents within the electronics industry, especially for creation of an IC design base in Hong Kong."

Over the past few years, Mentor Graphics has partnered with several of mainland China's educational institutions including the Peking University, Tsinghua University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences to set up joint laboratories and technology training centers.
