China's TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance has awarded last week (Jan. 30) to six handset makers, including Lenovo and ZTE, the first post-trial period access licenses to the country's homegrown 3G network, reports With the granting of the licenses, Lenovo, ZTE, Hisense, Samsung, LG and New Postcom can now work on winning procurement deals from China. In December, China's largest mobile operator announced plans to purchase 30,000 TD-SCDMA handsets and 10,000 data cards for 3G network trials.

In addition, the granting of the licenses seems to be an indication that the TD-SCDMA is entering the commercial stage. China's three major phone operators, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Netcom, are conducting network trials of TD-SCDMA in 10 cities. China has promised to provide 3G mobile communications services in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics in August.
