After its mobile devices business posted 38 percent decline in Q4 '07, Motorola Inc. said last week it is considering separating the unit from its other businesses, according to an Associated Press report.

Giving in to pressure from investors unhappy about the more than a year of dismal results and declining market share, the Motorola signaled a willingness to break itself up.

In a statement, Motorola said that separating the mobile devices unit would let each business grow and better serve its customers. The other two businesses under Motorola's wing are home and networks, which sells TV STBs and modems, and enterprise mobility solutions, which sells computing and communications equipment to businesses.

Motorola CEO Greg Brown disclosed the company is exploring in which the mobile unit can speed its recovery and retain and attract talent while enabling shareholders to realize the value of the franchise.
