AC/DC telco rectifier delivers 96% efficiency

The latest AC/DC front-end rectifier for telecom applications from Eltek Valere , the Flatpack2 HE Rectifier Module 48/2000, delivers 96 percent typical power conversion efficiency, according to the company. That's about four percent higher than today's state-of-the-art, front-end rectifier and cuts the typical rectifier's power losses in half.

As the first in the company's line of high-efficiency rectifiers, the Flatpack2 HE is a stand alone 48V rectifier and battery charger that can deliver up to2kW (and up to 41A) from an 85-300VAC input. "Carriers must boost their power consumption to meet broadband and wireless service demand, but at the same time want to meet their commitments to the environment," said Greg Fasullo, chief marketing officer. "The Flatpack2 HE gives carriers new ways to be green and to save enough money to pay for the upgrade to a high-efficiency power plant in a short period of time."

Telecommunications service providers used 1 percent of the total electricity consumed in 2007, with more than 115 billion kWh of energy flowing through AC/DC power systems to power network equipment, according to industry estimates. Approximately 10 percent of that power was wasted due to power conversion inefficiency. In addition, power plants emitted more than 100 million tons of carbon dioxide.

The proprietary Flatpack2 HE design draws on resonant power topology and full digital control (no analog PWM, and 40 percent reduction in external parts) for dynamic optimization of such parameters as switching frequency and power factor to minimize energy costs. The module's bulk efficiency is typically 96 percent over 30 to 70 percent of full load, and 95 percent over nearly its entire operating range. In that context, users will be able to recoup the rectifier's higher initial price in just two years.

The Flatpack2 HE includes a controller area network (CAN) bus interface to allow it to communicate with Eltek Valere's Smartpack controller or to be integrated into customer cabinets. Its Smartpack controller provides full control and monitoring of rectifiers and other system elements. The module has advanced system monitoring with multilevel access and comprehensive battery management. It facilitates remote management via the Web, SNMP, SMS, e-mail, or modem.

Flatpack2 HE rectifiers are rated for operation over -40C to +85C. The 1U-high rectifiers, sized for 19-inch racks, are suited to remote terminal applications. Or they can be integrated into systems with an output of up to 100kW for use in central offices. They are protected against over-voltage, short-circuits and over-temperature. The module design utilizes front-to-back airflow and chassis-integrated heat sinks.

The Flatpack2 HE Rectifier Module 48/2000 is now available from the company and its resellers worldwide. Pricing begins at $450.
