National Semiconductor Corp. will launch a low-power IC ecosystem made up of Indian suppliers and will announce the first Indian partners in the next few weeks.

The coalition will be centered on the chipmaker's PowerWise portfolio of products and IP relating to adaptive energy management.

"Our customers here have a much better systems perspective than most, and that counts for a lot when you think that they also have IC design skills," said Michael Noonen, senior VP for worldwide marketing and sales at National.

The company plans to license its technologies to Indian companies to develop products based on PowerWise technology. Likely applications include solar power and other energy uses. Much of National's PowerWise Adaptive Voltage Scaling technology was developed at its Indian R&D center here.

"Indian design companies have helped build reference designs or develop easy-to-use solutions around our chips. HCL Technologies, for example, put the development kit together for the LM 25576," a switch regulator based on the PowerWise family, said Jayant Bhat, business and operations director at National Semiconductor Hong Kong.

National's R&D center in Natsem India Design currently employs about 100 engineers focusing primarily on analog and mixed-signal technologies.
