Samsung unveils 65nm mobile application processor

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd will start sampling in May a mobile application processor that combines an ARM1176 processor core, clocked at up to 667MHz and advanced hardware blocks for multimedia processing.

The chip is being made in Samsung's 65nm process technology, and is targeted at smartphones and personal navigation devices (PND).

The device, dubbed the S3C6410, was revealed at this week's Mobile World Congress, where the Korean chipmaker also revealed details of a single-chip mobile TV channel decoder RF SoC that will be made with the same process. This will be sampling next month.

Mass production of both parts is scheduled for the third quarter of this year.

By embedding a hardwired Multi-Format Codec (MFC) on-chip, the S3C6410 can perform video capturing in MPEG4/H.263/H.264 format and replay functions in MPEG4/H.263/H.264/VC1 format using much less power, thereby giving consumers longer video playback time with a standard size battery.

The MFC offers standard-definition (SD) quality video capturing and playback at 30fps, as well as supporting two-way real-time video conferencing. In addition, the embedded hardware encoder/decoder also includes TV out capability in both the NTSC and PAL formats.

The mobile TV SoC, dubbed the S3C4F60, combines a channel decoder with an RF chip and Samsung says the device will support all worldwide TV standards with respect to frequency range and channel bandwidth.

The part integrates into a single chip a low noise amplifier (LNA), embedded SRAM, ADC, PLL, CPU (ARM 7) and a low drop-out (LDO).

Samsung says the S3C4F60 also offers a significant boost in mobile performance. By achieving 180Hz Doppler frequency performance at DVB-H 16 QAM, 8K, 2/3 CR and 1/4 GI, mobile TV products using the S3C4F60 can achieve perfect reception of DTV signals, even inside high-speed trains at speeds up to 300Kph.
