LG to supply 3G phones for GSMA's Horizon project

An exclusive deal to supply cellphones to a worldwide network project has been inked between LG Electronics Inc. and the GSM Association, according to a report in

LG will provide its 3G LG-KM560 and LG-KP330 models to GSMA's Horizon project. The project aims to allow mobile phone service from anywhere in the world using 3G wireless mobile frequencies of 850MHz, 1.9GHz and 2.1GHz.

The two folder-type phones have a download speed of up to 3.6Mbit/s and are equipped with Bluetooth and high-end digital camera functions.

"We've secured a foothold in the third generation market which is expected to chalk up sales of 250 million handsets this year," said Ahn Seung-kwon, head of LG's mobile communications division.

The 12 companies for which LG will supply handsets include Cingular Wireless, Hutchison 3G, KTF, Orange, Smart, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telenor, and Vodafone. The cellphones will be supplied across the world starting in 2H this year, the company said.
