'Smallest' VGA camera sensor doubles light sensitivity

OmniVision Technologies Inc. has launched the OV7690, a 1/13-inch VGA CameraChip sensor for slim camera phones and notebook computers. Touted as the smallest VGA CameraChip sensor, the OV7690 features OmniVision's newest generation of proprietary pixel architecture, OmniPixel3-HS, which promises almost double the sensitivity and low-light performance (960mV/Lux-sec) of other low-cost sensors.

The OV7690's new 1.75?m OmniPixel3-HS architecture combined with a unique, non-linear micro lens shift technology allows for a significant reduction in distance between the sensor and the lens, which enables a significant reduction in the module height while maintaining high levels of image quality and camera performance, explained OmniVision.

The ultrathin camera module measures only 4.5mm x 4.5mm x 2.8mm, a critical characteristic both for slim camera phones and for notebook applications where the camera module can be no thicker than the LCD housing.

The OV7690 comes in a newly developed CSP3, which further improves device reliability and reduces system height.

The OV7690 is sampling, with volume production to begin Q3 2008.
