Research In Motion Ltd (RIM) has filed an infringement suit against Motorola Inc. over several patents used for RIM's BlackBerry e-mail devices and Motorola's Razr smart phones, according to an Associated Press report.

In a court filing, RIM stated that the handset maker violated nine RIM patents and breached a 2003 contract by refusing to negotiate reasonable terms for an extension beyond January 2008. The filing came one day after Motorola filed a case against RIM for allegedly violating Motorola patents.

Motorola spokeswoman Jennifer Erickson said the company has not yet reviewed the complaint but believed that RIM's claims are without merit. Regarding the 2003 agreement, Erickson explained that it expired and both companies have not been able to reach a suitable agreement to move forward.
