The Hong Kong Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) announced the government will spend about $25.6 million in two years on the construction of Wi-Fi facilities, which will be made available to users free of charge.

This is according to a ChinaTechNews.com report, which stated that Hong Kong communications provider PCCW Ltd has established and maintained some paid public telephone booths, causing other fixed telephone operators to acquire authorization and sign agreements with the firm before using the booths to provide Wi-Fi services. OFTA believes that the operators also pay fees to PCCW for using the telephone booths.

As of January 30, there are 4,144 registered Wi-Fi hotspots in Hong Kong, 1,960 of which were provided by PCCW.
