Sun Microsystems Inc. has selected Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) as its foundry partner for processors based on a 45nm design as well as future generations. Sun will continue to design its chips while long-time partner Texas Instruments Inc. will continue to test and build the 45nm processors in TSMC.

The company, which currently designs processors based on 90nm and 65nm processes, is moving to 45nm to allow more circuitry to be squeezed onto the same amount of silicon. The 45nm design process also allows Sun to increase the number of threads per processor. Having more threads, when combined with Sun's Solaris 10 OS, promises to reduced energy consumption.

"TSMC is already fully engaged with engineers from both Sun and TI and I expect we'll all benefit from the cross-pollination of ideas among these three companies," said David Yen, Sun's executive VP, microelectronics group.

"This collaboration brings together all the ingredients to successfully design, test and manufacture some of the most complex chips in the world on TSMC's CPU-grade manufacturing process," said Jack Sun, VP of R&D at TSMC.
