Microsoft Corp. announced Feb. 25 it will now stop manufacturing HD DVD drives for its Xbox 360 video game consoles, according to an Agence France-Presse report.

In a written statement, the software giant said it plans to withdraw from HD DVD, following the recent decisions made by Toshiba Corp., Hollywood studios and retailers. Microsoft added it will no longer make new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360 but will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD players in the market.

The company, however, did not reveal whether it plans to shift to the Blu-ray format.

Microsoft's announcement follows HD DVD creator Toshiba's decision to stop selling HD DVD machines by end of March, conceding in its long high-definition video format battle with Blu-ray. Toshiba's decision paves the way for Sony's Blu-ray to become the industry standard.
