RGB multichip LED modules light up at 50lumens/W

Allegro MicroSystems has announced a new series of RGB multichip LED modules that provide a range of high-powered ALGaInP red, and InGaN green and blue LEDs that can be used in general lighting applications, amusement and gaming equipment, and for backlighting TFT displays. Each module combines eight LEDs in four or eight separate channels.

The SEPM series modules offer high efficiency, delivering 50lumens/W with all LEDs illuminated, along with high optical output of 25lumens, with all LEDs illuminated. The multichip LED modules are housed in a 5.23mm x 13.7mm case footprint, and 2.5mm overall package height.

The modular design allows the SEPM devices to be easily assembled into string arrays by connecting the modules in series. The devices also provide superior color balance throughout the display because of the high density of LEDs that can be achieved, said Allegro. This also minimizes the distance that power and control lines must run between LED modules and from the LED modules to the control electronics, said the company.

The white resin compound is especially formulated for superior reflectance and transmittance of the generated light. Enhanced thermal dissipation is achieved through the incorporated heat sink on the bottom of the package. The heat-sink can be mated directly to an external radiator through the PCB for better heat conduction allowing dense placement of modules.

The leadframe is plated with silver, providing a highly-reflective surface for the bottom and sides of the emitting area. The terminals and heat sink are also silver-plated.

Pricing starts at $5 in quantities of 1,000. Delivery is 12-week typical lead time.
