Fujitsu Hong Kong Ltd has launched the MHZ2 BT series of 2.5-inch HDDs with a capacity of up to 500Gbyte that will be available in Hong Kong by May.

The series is one of the products announced as part of Fujitsu's Green Policy Innovation program. Unveiled in December 2007, the program promotes energy-efficient products and services as a way to help customers lower their ecological footprint.

The MHZ2 BT new series responds to the growing need for HDDs in the 2.5-inch form factor that can handle high-volume storage for such products as digital video recorders (DVR) and external hard drives. The MHZ2 BT series requires only 1.8W of power for read and write operations, ranking it among the most power-efficient drives in its class. They are also manufactured in compliance with the EU's RoHS Directive, which limits the use of hazardous substances.

Demand for high-capacity hard disk drives that can handle high-volume data storage has been increasing rapidly, largely due to increased digital broadcasts, Internet-based video distribution and greater storage requirements from higher quality of video content. To address the need, Fujitsu has released HDDs that have storage capacities of up to 500Gbyte for use in PCs, DVR, STBs, and external HDDs, offering an environmentally friendly choice. In addition, the series also supports the Serial ATA 3Gbit/s interface for high-speed data transfers.

"Fujitsu has demonstrated its determination to innovation, and commitment to fulfilling customers' needs by the introduction of the new MHZ2 BT series of hard disk drives," said Christopher So, general manager, volume products division, Fujitsu Hong Kong. "Not only can the MHZ2 BT series house large storage capabilities, its low power consumption ensures that Fujitsuas well as its customersall contribute to addressing various environmental issues."

Fujitsu's Green Policy Innovation project is a company-wide effort aimed at achieving a cumulative reduction of more than 7 million tons of CO2 from fiscal 2007 through fiscal 2010. Under the initiative, Fujitsu will concentrate its know-how and technological resources in two areas: reducing the environmental burden of IT infrastructure, and reducing customers' environmental burden through new IT applications. Going forward, the company will successively introduce new products and services that will support these initiatives and enable customers to lessen their environmental burden, ultimately helping to curb global warming.
