Sony Corp. announced it will add Skype telephone service to its slim PlayStation Portable consoles in Japan this month to allow users to make free or low-cost calls, according to Agence France-Presse.The company will also start selling microphones for the PSP-2000 in Japan's market on Mar. 19.

In a statement, Sony's game unit said that after a system software update slated for Mar. 18, PSP users will be able to chat for free to other Skype users and, for a charge, call landlines and cellphones anywhere in the world.

The Skype service was launched for PSP in Europe and the United States in January but Sony had to delay it Japan because the microphones did not meet Skype's specifications.
