Texas Instruments Inc. has introduced a family of low-dropout linear regulators (LDOs) with dual-level voltage output that consume the lowest quiescent current in the industry at 500nA for MSP430 MCU-based, battery-powered devices.

TI's new ultralow-power TPS780xx LDOs have a voltage select (VSET) pin that gives designers the ability to switch between two voltage levels to customize and cut power consumption in half during operation. It allow designers to dynamically shift to a lower voltage level in a battery-powered design when the microprocessor is in sleep mode. The two voltage levels are preset at the factory by applying a unique architecture using EPROM, which provides multiple output voltage options.

The LDO requires no external parts to implement the device's dynamic voltage scaling feature for an 8bit or 16bit MSP430 or other microcontroller design. The TPS780xx is stable with any output capacitor greater than 0.1uF. The devices come in a 6-pin, 2mm x 2mm SON package, which is targeted at portable applications, such as mobile handsets, digital still cameras and MSP430 microcontroller-based applications that require low power, while maintaining a small footprint.

Key features
The TPS780xx family of LDOs feature 150mA low dropout regulator with pin-selectable dual level output, low dropout of 250mV (typical) at 150mA. They operate at 3 percent typical accuracy over load/line/temperature, with a low total quiescent current of 500nA.

Output voltages can be adjustable or fixed, and range from 0.8V to 5V. Fixed output voltages are easily modified using factory EPROM programming. The VSET pin toggles between two factory preset voltage levels. Also, they have integrated thermal shutdown and overcurrent protection

Pricing and availability
The TPS780xx family of LDOs are sampling. Volume production is expected this month. Suggested retail price in 1,000 piece quantities is 75 cents. Other LDOs supporting MSP430 microcontrollers include the TPS781xx with a 1uA quiescent current, TPS797xx and TPS715xx regulators.

TI is one of the exhibitors at the 13th IIC-China 2008.
