Spansion Inc. has announced that it has reached a production milestone of more than 25,000 wafer starts per quarter at its Spansion 1 (SP1) facility in Aizuwakamatsu, Japan, the world's first 300mm NOR fab.

A number of Spansion's customers are in the process of qualifying products at SP1, including 65nm products. Plans for SP1 include a migration plan to 45nm next year.

''We expect that this production ramp should rapidly reduce our reliance on external foundries and older technology nodes, giving Spansion greater capacity with attractive cost structures for our target segments,'' said Bertrand Cambou, president and CEO of Spansion.

The ramp raises questions about Spansion's recent foundry deal. In a major move, the company signed a deal with Chinese foundry provider Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC).

Spansion was expected to ramp up production within SMIC's fabs in either Shanghai or Wuhan. But that ramp is reportedly going slower than expectedif at all.
