India's Wipro Technologies has joined forces with U.S.-based Scalable Informatics LLC, a high-performance computing vendor, to provide expanded R&D services to the computer market.
The emergence of multicore CPUs, grid computing, computer clusters and storage "clouds" is driving the need to transform legacy applications, Wipro said. Businesses such as gaming and animation, energy, drug research, life sciences and manufacturing need better modeling and large-scale simulations.
The global high-performance computing market is growing at over 15 percent annually and grew over 130 percent from 2002 to 2007, according to market researcher IDC.
"As the high-performance computing infrastructure proliferates, business users are seeking application transformation help and support services to leverage such infrastructure and to reduce time to solution," said Joseph Landman, CEO of Scalable Informatics.
Wipro last year launched a series of supercomputers it built with U.S. firm Z Research Inc. The family includes a range of supercomputers ranging up to hundreds of thousands of trillions of calculations per second and superstorage scaling to multiple hundred of petabytes.
