The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) announced it would launch investigation on 30 semiconductor companies regarding possible patent infringements related to certain short-wavelength LEDs and laser diodes used in handhelds, HD DVD players (Blu-ray disc players) and data storage devices.

According to the ITC Website, the investigation is based on a complaint filed Feb. 20 by Gertrude Neumark Rothschild. The complaint alleges violation of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 concerning the mentioned short-wavelength LEDs and laser diodes that infringe a patent owned by Rothschild. The complainant seeks the ITC to issue exclusion orders and cease and desist orders. Click here to view complete list on ITC's Website.

ITC said on its Website that it has not yet made any decision on the merits of the case. An initial determination is scheduled as to whether there is a patent violation. The initial determination is subject to review by the ITC.
