Keywords:1394b open host controller? PCIe to 1394b controller?

Texas Instruments Inc. has expanded its 1394 (Firewire) portfolio with a flexible PCIe to 1394b open host controller. The packet throughput exceeds 87MBps, making the XIO2213A the fastest 1394b controller on the market today. The device's unique architecture creates a one-chip solution for 1394b for ExpressCards, PC add-in cards and motherboards or docking stations.

The XIO2213A provides interoperability by supporting three bilingual 1394 A/B cable ports at 100Mbit/s, 200Mbit/s, 400Mbit/s and 800Mbit/s. The device's internal dedicated PCI bus operates at 32bit, 66MHz and includes a pre-fetch agent to optimize PCIe packets for maximum 1394 performance.

The translation bridge is fully compliant with the PCIe Base Specification and supports the standard PCI-to-PCI bridge programming model. Eight 3.3V general-purpose inputs and outputs allow for further system control and customization.

Other key features include 100MHz differential PCIe common reference clock or 125MHz single-ended reference clock and PCIe adaptive equalization. The device fully supports provisions of IEEE P1394b-2002 and is fully compliant with 1394 Open Host Controller Interface Specification. Additional features include cable power presence monitoring, active state link power management which saves power when packet activity on PCIe link is idle and 5K asynchronous FIFOs.

TI's 1394b portfolio includes the TSB83AA22C PHY and link layer device, the TSB41BA3B and TSB81BA3D PHY devices.

The XIO2213A is available now in a 167-ball MicroStar BGA package. Suggested resale pricing in 1,000-unit quantities is $8.70. Evaluation modules are available online. Additionally, TI has partnered with Unibrain to provide complementary 1394b drivers for TI's 1394b customers.
