Taiwan-based embedded devices vendor Via Technologies plans to expand its embedded board portfolio to include modules compliant to the COM Express industry standard.

Via plans to offer fanless COM Express modules targeting at industrial PC and large OEM customers focused on dynamic application segments such as gaming, healthcare and industrial automation. The devices will be powered by the company's Eden or C7 processors, which are both implementation of the x86 architecture featuring clock frequencies from 500MHz to 2GHz.

COM Express is an industry standard board form factor for embedded computers. The standard, developed by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) provides for a board size of 95mm x 125mm. With the standard, the PICMG aims at higher connectivity and data transfer bandwidth than the original COM (Computer-on-Module) standard. The COM Express specification integrates core CPU, chipset and memory on the module, providing support for a broad range of connectivity options including USB, audio, graphics and Ethernet through board-to-board connectors to an I/O baseboard.

For evaluation purposes, Via offers a proprietary multi-I/O baseboard. With its offer, the company addresses large OEMs only.
