RIM sets up BlackBerry R&D center in Germany

Research in Motion (RIM) is set to build its first research facility outside of Canada in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, according to an Agence France Presse report.

The center will open on the campus of Ruhr-Universitat Bochum with 140 new employees and with plans to expand to as many as 500 people, the company said in a statement. The facility will focus on hardware and software development for its BlackBerry smart mobile devices, with some 45 million dollars to be invested in its first year of operation.

On the other had, Finnish handset maker Nokia announced in January it will close its production facility in Bochum on June 30, cutting 2,300 jobs to reduce costs.
