Rotary magnetic encoders operate in harsh environments

A line of rotary magnetic encoders that offer a variety of customizable options has been introduced by Bourns Inc. Touted as providing enhanced reliability and better performance than traditional optical and contacting encoders, the EMS22 non-contacting magnetic encoders are well-suited for environments where an extreme range of temperatures and harsh conditions such as moisture, particles, grease and oil are present. Typical applications include factory automation, fuel dispensing, marine, metal working, instrumentation and material handling.

Performance specs
The EMS22 magnetic encoder family performs over a wide temperature range from -40C to +125C and is capable of operating with either a +5Vdc supply, or a more energy efficient +3.3Vdc supply voltage, with the capability of rotating up to 10,000RPM while maintaining code accuracy. The product family is available in three different mechanical configurations that include a single or dual ball-bearing bushing mount, and dual ball-bearing servo mount.

The EMS22 products feature an austriamicrosystems Hall-effect ASSP capable of producing four distinct waveforms including quadrature, direction/step, absolute and pulse-width modulation waveforms to provide designers with greater flexibility in programming to suit their specific application requirements.

Range of options
These encoders can be interconnected in a daisy-chain configuration for a serial read-output option, which is beneficial in the case where memory overhead and space for wiring each individual encoder separately is critical, Bourns said. The chip-select option allows the interrogation of each encoder individually by the microprocessor, which takes less time to execute and enhances the speed of the control loop. The EMS22 magnetic encoder family is RoHS compliant and customizable. Customization can include analog output to 360 and brushless DC motor commutation. Cables, connectors, electrical angles, shafts and bushing configurations also can be customized.

The EMS22 rotary magnetic encoders are available now, with prices ranging from $19 to $26 in quantities of 1,000 based on selected options.
